History: Six generations ago, a demon entered the Doyle family line. Mark and Candace Doyle, already parents of seven, had no son to carry on the family name. Their unspoken wishes were answered, and Candace found herself pregnant with an eighth child. It was the son they had so wanted, and they named him Aldric. However, unbeknownst to the Doyles, their son was not their own. Candace’s mind had been wiped of any memory of the demon who had seduced her. Young Aldric’s character was tainted by his heritage, and he was a bitter and cruel man to all who knew him.
As time passed, the demon blood weakened, though there was always a propensity toward malice and insanity. One of Aldric’s granddaughters, a young woman by the name of Margaret, noticed her abilities and those of her family. She discovered what they were after much research and vowed never to use them. Margaret’s children, as well as her nieces and nephews, showed no sign of the abilities in the generation before, and she found that unless magical blood was reintroduced into the line, they would never reappear.
Margaret’s hopes were dashed. When her youngest, Isabel, had her first child, it was evident that her husband was magical. Indeed, Robert Bonner was a witch. Soon after his birth, Margaret bound the powers of the young René and did the same with his younger siblings, Meredith and Joshua. The three grew up with no concept of their hidden heritage.
René was raised in Evanston, in suburban Chicago. He was a moderately popular child, neither a member of the “in” crowd nor an outcast. He had several close friends growing up, and they remained close throughout their schooling and beyond college. René was extremely smart, but he hid his intelligence until it finally broke through in high school, at which point it was more accepted. He was a budding tactician, an excellent writer, and had a mind for history.
He went to Northwestern University, majoring in Journalism and History. Soon after graduation, before he could take a job with The Chicago Tribune, he and his siblings were called to visit his grandmother. Margaret told the children about the abilities she had found and how she had bound their powers at birth. She was also dying. She had contracted cancer, and the doctors said she had months to live, which meant the binding would soon wear off.
Meredith found the story impossible, the made-up delusions of a dying woman, and convinced Joshua of the same. However, something of the incredible story struck a chord in René. He believed his grandmother. Margaret told him to find a way to strip the powers from all three siblings before she died. He vowed to do so and fled Chicago soon afterward, leaving behind family, friends, and a new job.
A year and more passed, and as he ran into another dead end, René heard tell of the Charmed Ones, who would supposedly have the power to rid him and his siblings of whatever was coming. Knowing nothing other than the legends, he slowly followed the whisperings west to San Francisco. In regular contact with Margaret, he knows his time is quickly running out, but he is out of money and out of leads.
Personality: Despite being the oldest child, René does not have most of the usual characteristics, acting more like the middle sibling. Instead, his sister, Meredith, 20 months his junior, is the strong personality among the three. He will take a leadership role if pressed, but he would rather stay in the background and support. He is often the peace-maker in the family. He cannot understand how his sister and mother butt heads so often and tries to get between them when he can, one of the few times he ignores his precious prudence and tactics. Focused on his goals and the “bigger picture,” he sometimes cannot see the specifics when they are needed. René is a quiet young man, who prefers silence to incessant talking and reading to parties. This has been enforced by his constant moving since graduating college. More than anything else, he fears what will happen when his grandmother dies and his demon heritage is finally unlocked.
Current Events: Newly arrived in San Francisco, René is looking for the Charmed Ones, so that he might strip his powers before the binding disappears. Out of money at last, he is finally going to apply for a job, including taking an application from The Bay Mirror. However, he knows little about the Charmed Ones he is searching for. His leads have dried up, and he is growing desperate. He does not know where to turn next, unaware that one of his targets works in one of his potential offices.
